What we do

What we do

Adapting to a changing climate requires a new research approach focused on local needs. This should be backed by an action-oriented process that utilises and improves knowledge of climate risks and practical solutions.

The ARA promotes action-oriented research – or adaptation research for impact – globally, and its use to inform adaptation and resilience efforts. We create opportunities and provide funding for our members to develop user-driven innovations at both global and local levels.

As a result, we promote improved research planning and cooperation among the diverse members of the adaptation community. Our work supports the development of new programmes that provide resources for action-oriented research, while recognising the need to build capacity, especially in the Global South, and to minimise risks for vulnerable communities.

Our activities result from collective consultation and co-production, guided by dedicated task teams. Alliance members engage in these activities in a variety of ways, from planning and guiding their development to implementing and delivering them.

In all our activities, we uphold principles of openness and transparency, Global South leadership, thinking big and long-term, gender equality, and social inclusion.

Evidence Production

Promoting evidence-based decision-making is a core aim of the ARA. We enhance the evidence base for action-oriented research by publishing articles that highlight the approach’s benefits, iconic examples, best practices, and applications.

Using this evidence for adaptation actions enhances relevance, adoption, and evidence-based decision-making among our members and in new programme development. Learn more.

Tracking, Learning and Sharing

The ARA is dedicated to improving learning by more effectively engaging the research community. TLS activities monitor members’ and partners’ progress towards realising the ARA’s shared goals and offer a platform, with guidelines, for exchanging and learning from both successful and challenging experiences. TLS activities enable members to connect with one another and lay the foundation for long-term peer-to-peer sharing and learning across online and offline spaces. Learn more.

UNFCCC Engagement

We represent ARA members in engagements with the UNFCCC, including the Conference of the Parties (COP) and the IPCC. We also enhance the knowledge base on loss and damage and the global goal of adaptation. These engagements enable us to collaborate with international organisations, local entities, and both the public and private sectors to develop and strengthen links between adaptation research and action. Learn more.

Strategic Partnerships

We aim to collaborate with and support key ongoing adaptation initiatives across science, policy, and practice. Developing strategic partnerships within the adaptation community and beyond enables us to facilitate research planning and cooperation, as well as mobilise resources to support adaptation actions at scale. To support action-oriented adaptation that benefits vulnerable communities, radical collaboration may be required. Learn more about our microgrants.

New Programme Development

A core activity for the ARA is the development of new long-duration, action-oriented research programmes that develop user-centred adaptation solutions and build capacity in the Global South.

All Alliance activities contribute to this development, and we encourage members to come together to form new partnerships which fund such programmes, and which address the most pressing user needs and opportunities for research.

Delivering on its mission and values, activities endorsed by the ARA lead to three intended impacts that link research for adaptation with the communities most in need of effective solutions.

29

Finance

Improving access to climate finance for adaptation through a stronger, more targeted evidence base that clarifies what works.

87

Social resilience

Reducing climate risks to enable the achievement of societal goals, particularly for the most vulnerable, including women and girls, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, migrants and refugees, and other marginalised groups.

15

Capacity

Strengthening capacity in developing countries to produce and use research that informs locally led adaptation and resilience solutions.
