Engagement of vulnerable and marginalised coastal communities for empowerment and climate adaptation in Thailand

This project engaged vulnerable and marginalised coastal communities in Thailand through participatory research and shared learning to build adaptive capacity, generate scientific evidence, and identify community‑based climate adaptation solutions.

Summary

The report outlines a micro‑grants project by the Songkhla Community Foundation aimed at empowering vulnerable and marginalised coastal communities in Thailand, particularly women, to develop actionable climate adaptation plans and community‑based solutions in response to multiple risks and impacts of climate change, disasters, and socio‑economic challenges.

Through participatory research, shared learning, and capacity‑building activities, the project engaged two coastal communities—Ban Muang Ngam and Balasoh Kaosaen—to assess climate vulnerabilities, understand coastal dynamics, and identify ecosystem‑based adaptation options. The findings highlight complex social, political, and environmental problems exacerbated by climate change, including coastal erosion, inadequate infrastructure, exposure to strong winds and flooding, and governance gaps in coastal protection planning.

The project facilitated co‑production of knowledge between communities, academics, and authorities, unveiling differential vulnerabilities among social groups and emphasising the need for just, inclusive, and evidence‑based approaches to strengthen adaptive capacity and resilience.
