Prioritisation of adaptation research to strengthen, accelerate, and scale up smallholder agriculture in Nigeria

A co‑created analysis identifying priority adaptation research to strengthen climate‑resilient smallholder agriculture in Nigeria.

Summary

This report is a summary of a national, case study–based prioritisation exercise to identify action‑oriented adaptation research needs for strengthening and scaling up smallholder agriculture in Nigeria under increasing climate risks.

Led by the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support in collaboration with the Adaptation Research Alliance, the process combined national and sub‑national co‑creation workshops across Nigeria’s agro‑ecological zones, engaging farmers, policymakers, researchers, civil society and the private sector. The report highlights critical gaps in climate information services, extension systems, technology access, research–policy coordination, and gender and youth inclusion.

It concludes that locally led, inclusive and well‑coordinated research investments are essential to accelerate climate‑resilient agriculture, enhance food security and inform Nigeria’s transition towards effective implementation of its National Adaptation Plan.
