GESI SECURe implementation in South Africa

This report highlights how GESI‑responsive knowledge co‑production strengthened flood response capacities in informal settlements in Durban.

Summary

This report captures how knowledge co‑production was used to strengthen flood response capacities in informal settlements in Durban, South Africa, through the application of the SECURe decision support framework with a Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion focus.

Learning exchanges and learning laboratories brought together informal settlement residents, municipal officials and academics to share and validate locally developed flood response practices alongside institutional disaster management knowledge.

The report shows that translating co‑produced knowledge into practical tools, including community‑focused climate action guidance, improved awareness, information flows and preparedness, while supporting stronger connections between communities and municipal processes for climate and disaster response.
