Summary

This presentation outlines a capacity-building workshop on integrating climate change adaptation into local urban planning in Chile. Developed by the Department of Environment of the Municipality of Independencia in collaboration with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, it introduces practical tools for assessing climate and disaster risk, including analysis of hazard, vulnerability, exposure, and risk relationships.

The workshop highlights key urban climate threats such as heatwaves, flooding, drought, and structural fires, alongside growing vulnerabilities linked to informal settlements and rapid population increase. It also presents a resilience diagnostic tool aligned with international frameworks, supporting municipalities in evaluating institutional and community preparedness.

The presentation concludes with actionable recommendations, including integrating climate risk into local planning instruments, strengthening governance and citizen participation, and implementing nature-based and water management solutions to enhance urban resilience.
