Accelerating action research for smallholder agriculture adaptation in Kenya

A co‑created national analysis identifying priority action research for climate‑resilient smallholder agriculture in Kenya.

Summary

This report is a summary of a national, case study–based co‑creation process to identify and prioritise action‑oriented research that can accelerate climate adaptation for smallholder agriculture in Kenya. Led by the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support in collaboration with the Adaptation Research Alliance, the process combined national and sub‑national workshops across Kenya’s diverse agro‑ecological zones.

It brought together smallholder farmers, county and national government officials, researchers, civil society and the private sector to surface locally relevant adaptation gaps and research needs. The report identifies priority research areas across crop, livestock and fisheries systems, with strong emphasis on climate information services, affordable technologies, value addition, water management and inclusive knowledge sharing.

It concludes that locally led, participatory research is essential to strengthen resilience, improve livelihoods and support effective implementation of Kenya’s climate and agricultural adaptation policies.
