Flood risks, environmental sanitation and health research in riverine communities in Iloilo, Philippines
Summary
This report, developed by TAMPEI under the Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA) micro-grant, presents an analysis of data on flood risks, environmental sanitation, and health in riverine communities in Iloilo, Philippines. It is shown that low-income households living near rivers are highly exposed to flooding, storm surges, and climate variability. These risks are closely linked to poor sanitation conditions and environmental health challenges in informal settlements.
The report applies a participatory action research approach, where community members act as co-researchers in identifying risks and analysing local conditions. It focuses on household-level risk assessment and integrates findings into planning and decision-making processes. The analysis supports community-driven solutions such as wastewater treatment, settlement upgrading, and improved environmental health practices to strengthen resilience.
