Summary

This policy brief presents a case study‑based synthesis of how co‑creation can be applied to prioritise adaptation research needs for accelerating locally led smallholder agriculture in Nigeria. Drawing on national and sub‑national co‑creation workshops, the brief highlights how inclusive engagement between farmers, researchers, policymakers and extension actors helps identify context‑specific adaptation gaps and actionable research priorities.

It focuses on climate information services, climate‑smart agricultural practices, soil and water management, and gender‑responsive innovation as key entry points for strengthening resilience. The brief demonstrates that co‑creation improves the relevance, uptake and sustainability of adaptation interventions by aligning research and policy with lived realities of smallholder farmers.

It concludes with targeted policy recommendations to guide investment in demand‑driven, scalable adaptation research for Nigeria’s agri‑food systems.
