Building a strong and sustainable community for girls
Summary
This presentation outlines a community‑based climate resilience initiative in L’Asile, Haiti, developed within the Latin America and Caribbean regional framework of the Adaptation Research Alliance. The project focuses on strengthening the adaptive capacity of highly vulnerable communities—particularly girls—who are disproportionately affected by climate‑related hazards such as hurricanes, landslides, floods, and earthquakes.
Through a three‑stage approach involving community mapping, local training and participatory disaster‑preparedness planning, the initiative conducted Vulnerability and Capacity Assessments, formed community disaster response teams, and delivered awareness campaigns across four communal sections.
As a result, hundreds of residents were engaged, fifty grassroots organisations were sensitised to climate risks, and dozens of girls aged 15–25 were trained to take active roles in community‑level preparedness, risk mapping and recovery.
This is a brief overview that has been translated from the original language of Haitian Creole.
