On behalf of the Adaptation Research Alliance, the ARA Secretariat and Co-chairs would like to share how deeply saddened we are by the sudden loss of Professor Saleemul Huq on Saturday, 28 October 2023.
Professor Huq was Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development, professor at the Independent University, Bangladesh, advisor to the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group of the UNFCCC, and member of the ARA Steering Board.
A visionary of the climate justice movement and passionate leader of the Climate Vulnerability Forum (CVF) and Vulnerable Group of Twenty (V20)’s Climate Prosperity Plans, and then LDC University Consortium on Climate Change (LUCCC), he brought the reality of those on the frontlines of climate impacts to the global stage by speaking truth to power.
In addition to his unwavering commitment to representing vulnerable communities, Professor Huq published hundreds of scientific as well as popular articles and in 2022 was named by Nature as one of its top 10 scientists.
Professor Huq leaves an incredible legacy in his body of work and spirit in the fight for climate justice, climate adaptation, and loss and damage, particularly for those most vulnerable to climate impacts.
His views and insights as an ARA Steering Board member – and across the international climate community – will be sorely missed. Our Alliance endeavours to support these throughout our work and in our commitment to catalysing investment and awareness for action-oriented research for adaptation that improves the lives of the vulnerable communities Professor Huq represented.
Our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family. Rest in peace Professor Huq.
